Kansas Green Party Policy on Generative AI

As of our 2025 annual statewide convention, the Kansas Green Party has officially banned the use of generative AI for any party business or media content. We recognize the environmental and social impacts of genAI and believe it is important to take a stand as an organization in rejecting the normalization and greenwashing of technology that stands in opposition to our slogan “People Over Profit”.

Resolution Banning the Use of Generative AI in the Creation of Any Official Kansas Green Party Media

WHEREAS, The Green Party is an organization dedicated to environmental and social justice;

WHEREAS, the rapid and unregulated development of artificial intelligence has led to many ethical concerns surrounding job displacement, plagiarism and rampant misinformation, discriminatory and/or dangerous algorithmic biases, and the weaponization of AI for warfare and surveillance;

WHEREAS, generative AI in particular has a substantial carbon footprint, with artificial intelligence being attributed to an almost 50% increase in greenhouse gas emissions from certain data centers;

WHEREAS, the training and usage of AI models requires extensive amounts of natural resources, with the average ChatGPT query consuming 5-10 times more electricity than a simple web search, as well as large amounts of fresh water evaporated in data center cooling towers with a single data center potentially consuming up to 5 million gallons of drinking water per day;

WHEREAS, AI data centers put increased demand on already strained power grids, diverting resources from people who need it the most and driving up prices for low income and working class communities already burdened by heavy energy costs;

WHEREAS, these data centers are frequently constructed in locations that cause their environmental harms to disproportionately impact marginalized populations, draining resources from Indigenous land and causing increased rates of cancer and other health issues among Black and Brown communities due to pollution;

WHEREAS, the construction and expansion of AI data centers causes accelerated demand for critical elements such as cobalt which are primarily acquired via the exploitation and abuse of mine workers in the Democratic Republic of Congo and other developing nations;

WHEREAS, the resource requirements of generative AI are unsustainable, environmentally destructive, and only serve the interests of the Big Tech industry and late-stage capitalism; and

WHEREAS, even the casual use of such AI directly contributes to the aforementioned problems and is not in line with the Green Party’s Ten Key Values;

IT IS HEREBY PROHIBITED for members of the Kansas Green Party to use generative artificial intelligence such as large language models (LLMs), chatbots, and prompted image generators in the creation or production of party promotional material, writings, social media content, or any other documents to be used for official party business; and any member found in violation of this policy may be subject to loss of posting privileges where applicable or removal from party membership after an initial warning.
